Dental Extractions
Dental Extractions in Kitchener and Waterloo area
An extraction is when a tooth (and the roots beneath) is removed from the mouth. Even if the tooth is coming out already, it is usually better to get it professionally removed so that the roots do not remain. This is not the case with ‘baby’ teeth.
When Might I Need an Extraction?
Damage to the Tooth
If your tooth is severely damaged and cannot be repaired, it may need to be removed. This will prevent infection and the chance that the damaged tooth may cause harm to your other teeth or mouth.
Wisdom Teeth Extraction
In many cases, wisdom teeth are not needed in the mouth and may cause problems. Wisdom teeth may need to be removed as a preventative measure to safeguard against changes in the alignment of the teeth or when they cause the formation of a cyst, tumor or abscess.
When Do Wisdom Teeth Appear?
Unlike your other ‘adult’ teeth, wisdom teeth do not appear until your late teens or early 20’s. Because of their late appearance in your mouth, they frequently become negatively impacted as they develop. They can grow sideways into the teeth, angle forward, erupt from the jaw, or still be set in the jaw. All of these development deformities can cause cleaning difficulties and discomfort in the mouth.
