Dear Wonderful Community

Canadians nationwide are preparing to celebrate Labour Day on September 4th as the bright summer days draw to an end and the first signs of fall can be felt in the air. This day honours the toil and devotion of employees all across our wonderful nation and is more than just a holiday or a seasonal bookend. At Kitchener Dentist Sherwood Dental, we are extremely appreciative of the dedication and efforts of our fellow Canadians. We’d want to pause right now to consider the significance of Labour Day and connect it to the field of oral health.

The Canadian Holiday of Labor’s Origin

Let’s first review the history of Labour Day before moving on to the dental portion of our conversation. Canada was one of the first nations in the world to designate a day in recognition of workers. The first Canadian celebration of Labour Day was a procession in December 1872 in support of the Toronto Typographical Union’s struggle for a 58-hour workweek. On July 23, 1873, just a year later, Canada officially declared this day a holiday for employees, illustrating our country’s progressive position on workers’ rights.

The Connection Between Work Ethics and Dental Health

Even while the link between diligence and good dental health may not be immediately apparent, it exists! Canada has a long history of appreciating hard labour, and we also value the significance of maintaining good oral hygiene and general health. Here is how they connect:

Stress and Oral Health: Prolonged stress and ongoing hard work might affect our oral health. Stress can directly cause clenching or grinding of the teeth (bruxism), which can result in chipped or worn-down teeth as well as enamel erosion and sensitivity.

Snacks at Work and Dental Health: Having a treat or snack drawer at work is typical. But regular snacking—especially on sweet or acidic meals and beverages—can raise your chance of developing cavities.

Regimen & Oral Care: Those who work sporadic shifts or hours may find it difficult to keep up a consistent oral care regimen. But it’s important to make sure you brush and floss twice a day, regardless of your job schedule.

Guidelines for Keeping a Healthy Smile In the Midst of the Work

Observe Your Snacking: Choose tooth-friendly snacks while working. Consider yogurt, cheese, almonds, and/or fresh fruit. If you do indulge in sweets, be sure to swish some water in your mouth afterward.

Keep Hydrated: Drinking water throughout the day helps flush out bacteria and food particles and keeps you hydrated.

Regular Dental Exams: Be sure to schedule routine dental examinations and cleanings. Even with the best at-home oral care regimen, it is imperative to get regular professional cleanings and examinations.
